The first city of Leon was founded by the Spanish "Conquistadors" in 1524 at the slopes of the Momotombo Volcano. Due to constant earthquakes and volcanic eruptions in 1610 this city was later relocated 53 miles (90 km) further north from Managua.
The 1 hour 20 minute ride on the scenic road to León, borders the Xolotlán Lake or Lake Managua with an impressive view of Momotombo and Momotombito volcanoes. Once in the León area, the day tour gives you barely enough time to see it all. Our recommendation is to spend at least one night, this way you can enjoy the atmosphere this beautiful colonial city offers.
