The San Juan River starts at the southwest area of Lake Nicaragua (San Carlos town), and flows for 119 miles (199 km) to the Caribbean Sea. It forms the natural border with Costa Rica. The whole area is a tropical rain forest. The bio diversity is spectacular; you can witness the lush and exuberant vegetation as well as experience Mother Nature in its entire splendor.
The river is a natural habitat of different bird species like: Chestnut Toucans, Harpy Eagles, Boat Billed Herons, Great Egrets, Jacanas and Cormorants. Also for other species such as caimans (crocodiles), turtles, monkeys, red arrow frogs, etc.
The portion recommended for canoeing is from El Castillo ending in San Juan de Nicaragua.
